What is Aromatherapy Oil?

A Short History of Aromatherapy
While the term aromatherapy was invented in the late 1920s, the plant-based therapy dates back over 1000 years. Humans have always used sweet-smelling plants for medicine, incense, and perfume. The Egyptians were the first people to invent distillation equipment and to create oils with herbs that they used in medicine, rituals, perfumery, and cosmetics. After some years, Hippocrates (the father of medicine), researched the effects of aromatherapy oils on health. He endorsed their use for medicinal gains.
In the year 1937, French chemist and perfumer, Rene-Maurice Gattefossé, coined the term Aromathérapie. He discovered the therapy after burning himself while carrying out research. Immediately after getting burned, he dipped his arm into a liquid. He was astounded at how fast the burn healed; it also left no scars. He went to check the liquid and only then did he realize that it was lavender oil. His interest in medicinal oils was aroused and he started carrying out studies and writing notes on the subject. In 1937, he released a book on aromatherapy. The book was later translated into English and its title was changed to Gatttefossé’s Aromatherapy.
Other noteworthy aromatherapists who laid the groundwork for the practice are Dr. Jean Valnet, Madame Marguerite Maury, and Robert B. Tisserand. During WWI, Dr. Valnet used aromatherapy to treat soldiers. He also published a book titled The Practice of Aromatherapy. Madame Marguerite Maury introduced aromatherapy into cosmetics and massage. Robert B. Tisserand is recognized for introducing aromatherapy to English-speaking nations.
At present, there are numerous talented aromatherapists who practice the therapy for different reasons. Some wish to offer alternative medicine, others want to promote well-being, while others desire to balance people’s emotions. Whatever their reasons, there is no denying the fact that aromatherapy is worth its weight in gold.
Aromatherapy oils – also called essential oils, ethereal oils, or volatile oils – are a crucial part of the aromatherapy process. An essential oil contains the essence of a plant’s fragrance, the distinctive scent of the plant it’s obtained from. Some aromatherapy oils are blends comprised of various ingredients which produce a more powerful effect together than alone.
Essential oils are usually extracted through distillation. Other extraction processes include cold pressing, solvent extraction, expression, absolute oil extraction, and resin tapping. The oils are used in perfumes, soaps, cosmetics, and other products. They are also used to add scents to household cleaning products and incense and to flavor food and drinks.

An aromatherapy diffuser is a small device used to dispense aromatherapy oils into the environment. It is used to make rooms more fragrant and for therapeutic purposes. There are different types of aromatherapy diffusers.
Ceramic Diffuser: A ceramic diffuser looks like a small urn. A tea light candle is placed at its bottom below a shallow dish which holds the aromatherapy oil. The tea light heats the oil until it vaporizes.
Nebulizer Diffuser: This diffuser breaks the aromatherapy oils into small molecules before releasing them into the surroundings. Tiny molecules are easily absorbed and increase healing benefits. Nebulizer diffusers have motors and glass bottles or cylinders.
Heat Diffuser: This comprises candle diffusers, lamp rings, steam diffusers, and electric heat diffusers. They heat the essential oils to enhance diffusion throughout a room.
Evaporative Diffuser: This can be a clay pendant or a reed diffuser. The two expose aromatherapy oils to air, allowing them to evaporate naturally. A reed diffuser uses rattan sticks. The sticks have small channels that allow the oil to travel up and scent a room. A clay pendant has an absorbent surface that disperses essential oils.
Ultrasonic Diffuser: This creates vibrations in water through electronic frequencies. It generates a fine vapor of water and essential oils and disperses it into the air. People use ultrasonic diffusers in winter to humidify dry air. Some devices turn off automatically to limit the amount of oil being released.
