Can Foods Help Your Body Cleansing?

Going on the internet for healthy eating tips and information about foods that promote body cleansing can be overwhelming. There is a plethora of information out there, with each new article and website telling you to eat different types of food.

Well, that can be understandably very, very confusing! Which is why I am here to tell you about 6 food items that would not only help cleanse your body, but are easily available and require little effort on your part to incorporate into your new healthy lifestyle.

Important Body Cleansing Foods To Eat

The amounts of processed and genetically modified foods that we consume on a daily basis have left our bodies incapable of getting rid of all the toxins by itself. The toxic buildup is the reason you feel bloated, tired and cranky!  To revitalize your body, you have to cleanse it and flush out all those toxins- in other words detox it.

The best way to detox your body is by doing  a homemade detox. This way you yourself can keep track of everything you put in your body!  All you need is a basic cleansing diet schedule. And that’s where this article will help you. Here are the 5 food items that you need to add to your cleansing diet.

# 1  Water 

The most important part of detoxifying your body is to keep it hydrated at all times. If you wait until you are thirsty you are on the road to dehydration so it is best to drink regularly, before you are really thirsty.

The type or kind of water you drink is important.  Avoid faucet water as it usually has fluoride and other particulates in it that can create toxins in your  body.  Drink water that is filtered and ideally alkaline (Alkaline provides a lower pH which helps keep the body in a healthier state.) If you cannot drink alkaline then choose pure spring water.  Purified water would be the least desirable, although certainly better than faucet water.

The amount of water you should be drinking is recommended to be ½ ounce per pound of your body weight.  I prefer glass containers over all others. The next best is stainless steel and if need be use plastic although be certain that it is BPA free.

I would also recommend you acquire your containers and fill them in the morning and be sure you empty them ALL by bedtime.

Although I weigh about 110#, I drink about 84 ounces of alkaline water each day.  I will fill up my four 22 ounce glass containers (which have a rubber sleeve on them) and I am committed to making sure I drink all four during the day.  I take them everywhere with me.  This helps me keep track of how much I am actually drinking and it keeps me ingesting only pure, clean water.  And yes I do take my water bottle into even the most elegant of restaurants.

Consuming more water will flush out the toxins from your body.  Drinking this much water  is also known as a water detox and helps your body function much more efficiently.   It becomes a healthy way of life.

# 2  Quinoa

In 2013, The Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations officially declared 2013 “The International Year of the Quinoa.”

So what is so special about quinoa? Recent studies have shown that quinoa has a very high presence of anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds in them, which help cleanse the body. Quinoa also has a higher percentage of monounsaturated fats in them when compared to wheat. These heart-healthy fats boost your energy levels and keep you healthy. Moreover, the high content of fiber in quinoa keeps your digestive track clean and smoothly running.

This is why you should incorporate quinoa in your daily diet. You can have a bowl of quinoa  topped with a few prunes for breakfast! This healthy breakfast which is rich in healthy fats, fiber and protein will keep you energized and regular throughout the day.

# 3  Lemon Juice

Add more lemons to your diet. This can be easily done by squirting some lemon juice in your water to give it an extra bit of flavor, or using it as a garnish on your salad, or chicken!

Discoveries about the benefits of lemons have made them a “must have” fruit for your diet. Not only are they a rich source of Vitamin C, but they are known to have 22 anti-cancer compounds in them! Consider having a lemon a day to “keep the doctor away.”

A glass of homemade lemonade is an excellent cleansing agent for your body. Moreover, it is also extremely nutritional and provides an energy boost. In fact, there is a cleansing method known as the Master Cleanse based on lemonade that has been around for over fifty years! Even Beyonce and many celebrated nutritionists have talked about the benefits of using lemonade as a cleanser!

Ideally use lemons without added sugar.  If you make lemonade use as little sugar as possible and never use artificial sweeteners.

# 4  Fruit  

Fruit in its whole form is great for nutrition and cleansing. Blueberries have quercetin that boosts immunity which helps your liver function better while bananas come have high amounts of potassium and vitamin B6, which helps the kidneys do their job.

To list all the benefits of each fruit would be too much for this article so suffice it to say that when eaten whole (not juice), fruit has fiber, vitamins and other nutrients that will make your body (and your taste buds) very happy.

I DO NOT recommend fruit juice or even smoothies because the fiber is destroyed in the process.  When the fiber is damaged the high levels of sugar are absorbed very quickly into the bloodstream and can create reactive hypoglycemia and insulin resistance, both of which will cause unhealthy body.

# 5  Vegetable Broth Soup

For dinner have vegetable broth soup. You can add all sorts of veggies in there, from carrots to cabbage to fennel and garlic.

The high protein and calcium count in fennel and garlic help the gallbladder and liver function efficiently. Whereas, carrots are rich source of beta-carotene which is a compound that is good for our eyesight.

You can have your broth with sauerkraut and apple. Sauerkraut has probiotics that protect your gastrointestinal tract whereas apples help improve liver and kidney functions.

# 6  Green Foods

Fill your refrigerator with green foods.  Kale, Spinach, Barley, Kamut (wheatgrass), Blue Green Algae, Alfalfa, Spirulina, Chard, Arugula and other organic leafy greens are wonderful superfoods and great for your health..  These foods are potent antioxidants that will detox and heal your body.

Chlorophyll can help remove metal toxicity, herbicides, cleaning products and pesticides.  All of these will help keep the liver clean.

Food You Should Avoid

All these detox diets such as water detox and lemon cleanse would be pointless if you don’t refrain from consuming foods that cause inflammation and contain toxins for your body.

Here’s a list of food items you should say no to:

  • Fried food
  • Foods high in sodium
  • Sugar
  • All Processed and Foods
  • Genetically Modified Foods (if it does not say NON-GMO, it is most likely Genetically Modified)
  • Soy
  • Caffeine
  • Carbonated drinks

Along with this diet, you should also maintain an active lifestyle.  Make sure you exercise daily. It doesn’t have to be something intense.  Go for a walk in the park or do something fun. Get involved in a team sport or join a dance class!  This will get the lymph system moving, and get your blood oxygenating  and cleaning your system.

You would find many people out there claiming a 3 day or a 7 day cleansing diet is a better solution. While it is true that eating cleanly for more than a week can help break some very unhealthy eating habits, it is equally  important to not just fall back into old unsupportive eating patterns.

All good things in life come with a little effort and don’t just fall into our laps! The same goes for your body and health. The first few days of any cleanse can be challenging;  however, once you set new eating patterns, you will find that you will  love the way your body feels.  The increased energy levels and freshness you will feel comes from your healthy diet and lack of toxins in your body!
