What they don’t know is that health isn’t just determined by the number they see on the scale. The relationship between weight and health can’t be evaluated by use of a weighing scale.
When you visit your doctor, they may calculate your body mass index (BMI) to check whether you are at a healthy weight. They may rely on the results to assess your health. But most people do not know what BMI is and what it does.
Body mass index (BMI) gives a clear picture as to whether your weight is within a healthy range. It takes into account your weight and height to estimate the total body fat. The BMI calculator computes the ratio of your weight to height to establish the amount of body fat you have.
The figures indicated on the BMI calculator can be used to determine whether you are overweight, underweight, or in a healthy weight range. A healthy BMI range is between 19 and 25. A BMI of 19 and below shows that you may be underweight, while anything above 25 means you are overweight. Those with a BMI of 30 and above are considered obese. A high BMI exposes you to the risks of weight-related health problems.
What is BMI?
BMI is an assessment of body fat obtained by calculating your weight in relation to your height. The BMI calculator works out the ratio of your weight (in pounds) to your height (in inches) and indicates whether your weight is within a healthy range. A report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) specifies that individuals with a body mass index of between 18.5 and 24.9 should consider their weight normal.
How to Calculate BMI
An accurate measurement of height is taken in meters while that of weight is taken in kilograms. However, you can also measure your height in inches and weight in pounds. You do not have to visit a health professional to take your measurements. You can do it anywhere as long as you have a tape measure and a weighing scale.
You can calculate your body mass index manually or by using an online BMI calculator. First, you need to know your weight in pounds and your height in inches. To manually calculate BMI, divide your weight by height squared. Multiply your answer by a conversion factor of 703.
Alternatively, you can use an online BMI calculator which is very straightforward. All you need to do is fill in your weight and height details and the tool will do the math for you. (my personal favorite)
Align your results against the different weight indicators to get a clear picture of your rating. This way, you will know whether your weight is within a healthy range or not. Knowing your BMI will help you to make better choices regarding your health. There are different categories a person can fit into. They range from underweight to dangerously obese.
- If your BMI is below 18, you are underweight.
- If your BMI is between 19 and 25, your weight is normal.
- If your BMI is between 25 and 29, it means you are overweight.
- If your BMI is between 30 and 39, you are obese.
- If your BMI is 40 or over, you are dangerously overweight.
BMI Calculator for Men vs. BMI Calculator for Women
The BMI calculator for men is not any different from that of women. However, BMI scores vary widely depending on age and sex. Body mass index does not differentiate between muscle and fat and is high in some people and low in others. For instance, an athlete with huge muscles may have a high BMI but an elderly person who has less muscle may have a low BMI. This does not mean that one is overweight and the other underweight.
Body mass index does not give an accurate indication of the distribution of body fat within the body. The BMI calculator for women, in particular, does not reveal whether a lot of fat is concentrated around their hips or waist. Fat around the waist is more dangerous than that on the hips.
Interestingly, muscle mass weighs more than the same quantity of fat. The BMI calculator tends to overestimate body fat in large muscular people and underestimates fat in the less muscular. Men have more muscles as compared to women. As a result, their BMI is often higher. They may weigh more but be slender than their female counterparts.
Since there is no estimation for BMI in relation to muscle mass, health experts recommend measuring waist circumference. If your waist circumference is greater than 40 inches (or greater than 35 inches in women) it exposes you to weight-related problems such diabetes and heart diseases.
To correctly measure your waist circumference, place a tape measure around your waist while standing. Breathe in then note down the figure immediately after breathing out.
