Lemon Water Diet a Fad?
If you follow health trends you have probably heard people talking about the lemon water diet. Is there something to this? Or is it just another one of those fads that are all the rage for a period, before people turn their attention to the next so-called miracle answer?
What’s all the fuss about?
The lemon water diet is essentially a type of detox. Basically what it amounts to is drinking lots of hot water infused with lemon. Following the lemon detox diet is meant to provide several benefits. Probably the most talked about effects are weight loss and a general detox. But how accurate it this? Before you run and switch on your kettle, let’s have a look at this a little more closely…
Separating the facts from fiction
The truth is that following a water and lemon diet won’t help you to lose weight on its own. The reality is that people often lose weight by following the lemon water detox simply because they are substituting water for their usual calorie-laden drinks. In terms of weight loss, it’s almost akin to replacing your fruit juices, sugary coffee, etc with plain cold water. A warm water lemon drink can create a feeling of well being and satiety. Bottom line, this type of warm soothing drink can reduce stress with the consequence the stress induce eating will be lessened.
What are the real benefits?
Usually the advice is to start your day with a cup of warm lemon water. This is certainly the case when it comes to the Ayurvedic approach. This is because the lemon juice will initiate healthy digestive processes for the day. Warm water also has a nurturing and easing effect when it comes to the digestive forces.
Drinking water with lemon can help to reduce bloating in the short term. This is because lemon water can work as a mild natural diuretic. But this is not to be used as a cure for long-term water retention symptoms.
Lemon is not only a digestive aid, but it also cleanses your liver. Cleansing the liver is vital to your long term health so please do your research about this.
And so we come to the biggie: does lemon water actually detox your body? There is definitely some truth here. Lemons contain an antioxidant called d-limonene that assists the detoxification process in the liver. Lemons also contain citric acid. Citric acid boosts the enzyme processes, thereby stimulating the liver and aiding detoxification. In addition, by increasing your rate of urination, more toxins are flushed out your body.
In addition to aiding digestion and detoxification, lemons are also known for their antiviral, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties. This is because lemons also contain vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, potassium, pectin and bioflavonoids.
Importantly, lemons have an alkalizing effect on the pH of the body. This might sound strange because we know lemons to be acidic. However, once the weak acids in the lemon are metabolized, the minerals in the lemon actually alkalize your blood. This is important in preventing disease, pain and inflammation. There is a significant body of research that indicates having an alkaline body chemistry can help prevent or lessen the effects of many diseases, the most notable of which is cancer.
Lemons have a healing effect and promote recovery from injuries and stress. They reduce the effects of stress and anxiety, provide you with energy, and boost your mood. What’s more, you’ll also have fresh breath and a clear glowing complexion.
Here’s how to go about it…
Ideally you should be using lukewarm purified water. In other words, the water should be neither scalding hot nor ice cold. Try to source organic lemons if you can. It is important that you use actual lemons, rather than bottled lemon juice. The juice squeezed from half a lemon is sufficient for one glass of water. Drink this first thing in the morning, before you ingest or do anything else.
When to avoid the lemon water craze
Fortunately, unlike many other health fads, the lemon water detox is far from harmful. However, you do need to keep in mind that lemon is a citrus fruit. As such, you don’t want to be regularly drinking lemon water if you suffer from heartburn or acid reflux – these symptoms are exacerbated by citric foods. The acid in lemons can also cause a wearing away of the outer layers of your teeth.
The bottom line
Although this may not be a great option in terms of a weight loss diet, there are many benefits associated with a lemon water cleanse.
In addition, there is something to be said for the lemon water trend if it encourages you to drink more water. Some find warm lemon water to be a warming healthy alternative to coffee, hot chocolate and the like in cold weather. Others find lemon infused cool water to be a refreshing drink in summer, when plain water is just too, well, plain. You can even flavor your water with other ingredients such as mint, basil, cucumber, and lime.
And there’s never anything wrong with drinking lots of water.
