What are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are strong liquids that contain aroma compounds from plants. They are also called ethereal or volatile oils. Some essential oils are named after the plants from which they are obtained, like lavender oil. One drop of an essential oil is powerful enough to soothe a burn, stop a cold, or relieve a painful bug bite.

Essential oils have been used since time immemorial for healing, spirituality, and cosmetic purposes. They give plants their essence – their distinctive aromas and healing properties. When correctly used, they can offer numerous health benefits. Unlike artificial drugs, they don’t have any adverse effects.

Essential oils are extracted from plant parts such as fruits, leaves, roots, peels, resins, stems, and barks. One oil can contain more than 100 chemical compounds, each with a certain therapeutic property. Due to this, many volatile oils are used for different conditions. Almost all volatile oils have antiseptic properties. Many have antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties.

Essential Oils Uses

Not a day passes by that we are not reminded of the importance of natural oils. We use them in our food and household products. They offer pleasurable sensory experiences because of their restorative natures and aromas. They impact our emotional wellbeing, brain chemistry, and entire health. Here are a few essential oils uses.

Mood Enhancement

Essential oils like lavender, orange, peppermint, and jasmine can brighten up your day. Their unique fragrances stimulate the limbic system, the part of the brain that deals with emotion and memory. They soothe the nerves and can relieve stress and nervous tension. Lavender can also treat migraines and headaches.

Skin Renewal

Do you have dry or oily skin? Want to prevent aging skin? Looking to get rid of acne? Start using essential oils for skincare. Oils like lavender, geranium, frankincense, and rose have a wonderful effect on the skin. Rose is great for aging skin as it contains various therapeutic compounds that promote healing. It has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties which help refine skin tone and texture. Lavender helps regenerate skin cells and is ideal for aging skin, scarring, and sun spots. Geranium controls oil production and decreases acne breakouts while frankincense reduces wrinkles, soothes chapped skin, and decreases the appearance of scars.

Freshening a Home

If you think that harsh chemical formulas are your only cleansing option, think again. Artificial cleansers aren’t as clean as you think. Many mainstream home products like hand soaps, toothpastes, and washing liquids contain dangerous ingredients that can be harmful even in small amounts. If you think that your family deserves better, fill your home with natural cleansers. Get lemon, eucalyptus, and peppermint. Lemon deodorizes while the other two purify. Use ethereal oils and freshen your home without compromising.

Boosting Hair Growth

Want radiant, healthy-looking hair? Try volatile oils.  Most shampoos and hair products contain synthetic materials that have a negative effect on the hair, scalp, and skin. Basil promotes hair growth by activating circulation, chamomile soothes inflamed scalps, cedar wood treats dandruff and hair loss, while lemon helps balance natural scalp oils.

Improving Physical Wellness

Modern lifestyles don’t create ideal conditions for physical wellness. Lack of exercise, poor diet, and excess environmental toxins can diminish energy levels and leave the body unbalanced. Ethereal oils like rosemary, tea tree, sage, and citrus can boost energy levels and restore balance, ensuring you feel your best.

Best Essential Oils

There are so many essential oils to choose from.

There are so many essential oils to choose from.

It is no secret that essential oils are too many to count. With so many options, it can be hard to choose the best one for you. Here is a partial list of the of some great  ethereal oils and their benefits.

Tea Tree

One of the most effective essential oils, tea tree is lauded for its immune-boosting properties. It is used in many shampoos and lotions because of its healing properties. It treats skin conditions, respiratory problems, cuts and burns, and muscle aches. You can mix it with your lotion and apply on the skin or add it to your bathwater.

Lemon

Lemon essential oil has many therapeutic qualities. It aids in digestion, boosts concentration, and relieves symptoms of arthritis and acne. The oil has a lovely scent and makes a perfect home fragrance. You can add some lemon oil to your bathwater, use it during massage (through a carrier oil), or put it in a diffuser.

Peppermint

This oil is used to enhance mental alertness and has a revitalizing effect. Its inherent energy-boosting properties make it one of the best essential oils. It is used in massage oils, vaporizers, mouthwash, lotions, and shower gels. Use it to improve concentration, to enhance mood, to boost digestion, and to eliminate symptoms of congestion.

Patchouli

This popular essential oil is usually associated with hippies or earth lovers who use it to enhance mood. Patchouli fights skin infections and helps wounds to heal thanks to its powerful skincare properties. It also relieves depression and anxiety, reduces bloating and cellulite, and curbs addiction.

The oil is a mental stimulant and boosts memory, concentration, and brain performance. It also acts as a pain reliever and soothes aches, painful muscles, migraines, and headaches. Lavender is one of my favorite Essential Oils!

Lavender

Lavender is without a doubt one of the best volatile oils in the market. It smells great and works wonders. It treats colds and migraines, relieves stress, and improves sleep. It is a deodorant, antidepressant, diuretic, decongestant, and sedative.

I have used Lavender on curling iron and other burns and like a miracle it eliminates pain, swelling redness and speeds healing tremendously.  I do not travel without it as it also helps with sunburn, stings and bites.

One important factor with Essential Oils and Homeopathy.  Oils, because of their very strong smell have a tendency to cancel Homeopathic Remedies.  This is not harmful in any way but if you take a Homeopathic Remedy as a constitutional remedy or for an ailment, the oils may cancel the remedy and therefore you may not get the expected results.

Get the Best Essential Oils

Essential oils have become increasingly popular. They can treat almost every condition known to man – from eczema to ear infection. That being said, it can be hard to find a company that sells ethereal oils that are 100% pure. Some companies that sell high-quality essential oils include Now Essential Oils, Young Living, Aura Cacia, Native American Nutritionals, and dōTERRA. They extract oils from healthy plants and use gentle extraction methods. Buy quality volatile oils to get maximum benefits.

Another important factor to consider when you are purchasing oils is to look and see if they are diluted.  Diluted oils are not a bad thing although they are not pure and will not be as potent as the 100% pure oil.

You will also need to look for the purity of the mixed oils.

When possible organic oils are always a great choice.

I personally have a diffuser which sits on my desk. I put yummy smelling oils in the water while it diffuses the smell of different oils depending upon what I am desiring in that moment.  It might be alertness or calming or joy etc.  Oils can help with virtually any situation or aliment.
