History of Homeopathy

Homeopathy as we know it today exists because of the efforts of one man – Samuel Hahnemann. Hahnemann was frustrated by the medicine of his day. He lived at a time when the fundamentals of modern medicine had not yet been developed (200 years ago). The first antibiotic had not been created, scientists hadn’t discovered the germ theory of disease, drugs weren’t tested for efficacy and safety, and surgical procedures weren’t performed with anesthesia.

For many years, Hahnemann tried to find remedies that weren’t as dangerous and invasive as those of his time – he was not successful. One day, he stumbled upon an amazing observation. He swallowed a tiny amount of cinchona bark, the source of quinine which is used to treat malaria. He developed symptoms of malaria and concluded that quinine’s power to cure malaria lay in its ability to produce malaria-like symptoms. From this, he developed the first law of homeopathy: like cures like. It simply means that substances which cause certain symptoms can be used to treat diseases with the same symptoms.

As Homeopathy evolved, Hahnemann developed 2 other laws: the law of infinitesimal doses and the law of succussion. The law of infinitesimal doses states that when homeopathic medicines are diluted in water or alcohol, their therapeutic power increases. The law of succussion holds that the potency of a cure is increased by vigorous shaking . The infinitesimals law was developed by Hahnemann in the later stages of his career, but is regarded as the primary characteristic of homeopathy.

Hahnemann also developed the miasm theory, his own theory of disease. According to the theory, there are 3 miasms (infectious principles) which cause all human diseases. Homeopathic medicines treat these offending miasms.

Today there are at least 5 Miasmic types.

What Is Homeopathy? A Simple Homeopathy Definition

Many people define homeopathy in different ways. However, homeopathy is simply a form of alternative medicine that treats the whole person. It utilizes natural remedies that stimulate the immune system to kickstart the healing process. In homeopathy, medicine is administered according to a patient’s mental, emotional, and physical symptoms.  It works at an energetic level and creates an alignment to the incongruent energies cause the illness or imbalance.

Homeopathy is safe and effective and is a wonderful option for diseases that affect us today.

The Difference between Homeopathy and Conventional Medicine

Homeopathy and traditional medicine both excel in different areas of patient care. Conventional medicine is invaluable in emergency situations while homeopathy is a great option for non-emergency illnesses. Conventional medicine has a less comprehensive approach and is based on laboratory data and other procedures. Homeopathy seeks to treat the whole person – mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally.

Traditional medicine controls illnesses via regular use of medical substances. If the medication is taken away, the patients become sick again. Therefore, it offers no permanent cure. For example, a person suffering from high blood pressure takes a pill every day to manage the symptoms but not to cure the disease. Conventional medicine offers suppressive drugs – drugs which suppress symptoms.

Homeopathic remedies work on the immune system. They activate the immune system, making it able to fight diseases, and restoring a person’s health in the process. Since the medicines are diluted, they don’t have any side effects and make the body stronger than it was before. Pharmaceutical drugs act directly on diseases; they kill infections but at the same time kill some body cells, leaving patients weaker than they were before.

What Happens When You Visit a Homeopath?

A homeopath seeks to find the “totality of symptoms” and accomplishes this by conducting a homeopathic history. He asks about physical symptoms and how they vary according to parameters such as temperature, time of day, external stimuli, and much more. The homeopath then inquires about generalities like food likes and dislikes, character of sleep, favorite activities, best and worst time of day, etc.

Questions about mental functioning are also asked. The homeopathic doctor tries to understand a patient’s personality by asking how he is at work, how he is as a parent/spouse, his fears and worries, etc. The patient is also asked about his family history and his medical history. A physical examination is performed based on the history and specialty consultation and lab tests may be ordered to complete the process.

The intake of information is extensive and complex.  You might find some of the questions seemingly not related to what you think you came to the Homoepathic for and yet each question is related to the “Whole” picture, The “Whole” You.

The homeopathic physician then ranks symptoms, generalities, and modalities by intensity. He looks for remedies known to have cured such symptoms or align the energy of the body so that it can heal itself.

A homeopath seeks to understand the patient as a whole person. He examines various aspects of the whole person to activate healing at these levels. As a healing technique, homeopathy is holistic because it scrutinizes different features of a person and offers remedies that stimulate healing at these levels.

Homeopathy Focuses On the Individual

Homeopathy is based on the belief that the body displays symptoms to show that something is out of order. A human being is never partially sick. An imbalance in the body can trigger illness but unless the imbalance is properly addressed, a patient will never be ok even if symptoms go away. Homeopaths examine symptoms to ensure they offer personalized remedies. These remedies help eliminate symptoms and also address the root cause of disease.
