Transformation Through Cleanliness of the Body and Spirit
One of the most important rules of Vipassana is that all those who practice this form of meditation maintain complete cleanliness of the body and spirit. At Vipassana retreats, this includes:
- abstaining from drugs, alcohol, tobacco, and all others intoxicants
- abstaining from sexual activity
- abstaining from killing any living thing
- abstaining from stealing
- abstaining from lying
- abstaining from sensual entertainment
- abstaining from luxury
Also, while undergoing a Vipassana course at a Vipassana meditation retreat, like a Vipassana California retreat, for example, you are not allowed to touch any other people, regardless of gender.
As a result, men and women are to meditate separately. Interaction between people of the opposite sex is not allowed, not even between married couples or families.
Moreover, since you are practicing Vipassana, you are to cease all other meditation techniques, prayer, yoga, religious activity, or physical activity. These do not necessarily all interfere with the act of meditation, but their practice is suspended for the duration of the course.
All these measures are meant to ensure complete and total focus and concentration on Vipassana meditation techniques and your goal of achieving inner peace and clarity.
But to do so, you need to separate yourself from the physical, everyday world and dedicate yourself to meditating. Cleansing your body, your mind, and your soul of worldly temptations is a requirement.
All in all, it is clear that Vipassana can be of tremendous help to anyone who is struggling with conflicting feelings. If you feel lost or are seeking to achieve a sense of clarity and inner peace, Vipassana may be the right path for you. But to practice Vipassana, you must be aware of the requirements and process and must agree to follow them in their entirety.
This discipline can be very powerful and as stated, is for those that are very clear that they are willing to eliminate all external distractions to the point of being able to focus only upon the meditation itself. This is not readily done for most people, therefore it may not be for everyone.
What is important is to know what works for you and determine to what degree you are willing to dedicate a specific discipline and the time to acquire the results that you are seeking.
There are many, many forms of meditation and they all have benefits. Find the one that works best for you and if this one is it, then delve deeply into it and notice that you will have tremendous results.
Your journey towards clarity of thought and inner peace can be aided through practicing Vipassana. You just have to make a commitment and be ready to respect the teachings of this old practice. You will gain insight through self-observation, discipline, clarity and cleanliness, and you will be able to transform yourself and your entire life.
